About Banjul

Women swathed in bright fabrics stroll through Albert Market, babies and bags slung on their backs. They head for the food stalls to haggle over succulent mangoes and sugary tamarind. Visitors congregate around the craft stalls, where colourful woven baskets and beaded necklaces are made before your eyes. Nearby, on the banks of the Gambia River, young boys paddle off in shallow boats, silhouetted against an orange sun. With such a village atmosphere, it is hard to believe that Banjul is Gambia’s capital city. Only the pillared Arch 22, which welcomes you into the city, and the twin minarets of King Fahad Mosque give any sense of Banjul’s importance.

There are no mountains in the Gambia. The highest point is Red Rock, which is only 53 metres above sea level.

Find a relaxed beach bar and feast on spiced kebabs and fresh seafood. Banjul moves at an unhurried pace, a perfect place to lean back and unwind.

Banjul is the smallest capital city in Africa, with a population of just 60,000 and an area of 12 square kilometres.
