About Mombasa

Two camels lollop slowly across the expanse of blinding white sand, with billboards strapped to their sides – advertising the local beach bars. ‘Ride?’ offers the man leading them, as he is lifting the brim of his hat and squinting in the brilliant sunlight. A couple of kite-surfers whizz by, creating a trail of foam on the otherwise calm sea.

Let’s safari! Mombasa’s Shimba Hills, second largest coastal forest in East Africa, is excellent for spotting elephants.

It would be all too easy to spend all your time on one of Mombasa’s glorious beaches, but the city is worthy of your attention too. Explore the temples and craft boutiques of the Old Town, where wooden-strutted buildings display an exotic mix of Arabic, Portuguese and British influences. Then make your way to the seafront in time for dinner, where you will have a choice of the freshest seafood and spicy, Indian-influenced dishes. In every sense, Mombasa is a delight.

Mombasa is Kenya’s main port, situated around Africa’s deepest harbour.
